Hymn for Advent

This hymn text is set to the tune for “The Church’s One Foundation” (AURELIA) and is an adaptation of beautiful 17th century German hymn, intended for use during Advent.

Lyrics

Verse 1:
O Lord, I long to meet You
And welcome You aright;
Draw near that I might greet You,
My hope, my heart's delight.
Come, make the spark within me
A fire within my breast
That I, the meek and lowly
Might honor such a guest.

Verse 2:
No price, dear Lord, could move
You to leave Your rightful place,
But love for which I love You
Pursued my soul in grace;
A world where sorrows deepen,
Which sin and suff'ring fill-
Beyond all mortal reason
You deign to love it still.

Verse 3:
Rejoice, all you sad-hearted,
Who sit in deepest gloom,
Who mourn the joys departed
And tremble at your doom:
Despair not, He is near you,
Yes, standing at the door,
Who best can help and cheer you
And bids you weep no more.

Verse 4:
Sin need not make you fearful,
Ashamed to see His face-
The contrite and the tearful
He covers with His grace.
He comes, for us procuring
Forgiveness borne of love
For all, in Him, securing
Their heritage above.

Verse 5:
Our Lord will come with gladness,
In mercy and goodwill,
To bring an end to sadness
And bid our fears be still.
In patient expectation
We live for that great day
When a renewed creation
His glory shall display.
