He Gives

This hymn points us to the truth of Matthew 11:28-29: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Jesus invites all who feel the burden of both self-righteous striving and self-righteous despairing to let go of self-focus and accept the gift that he offers – full acceptance because of what He has done, not because of what we have or have not done. Each verse describes a struggle or a trial – guilt, anger, discomfort, or bondage – and how Jesus offers to rescue us in that situation. May we continually turn upward to see him as the one who always gives more, giving of himself even undo death for us. (Philippians 2:8)

Lyrics

Verse 1:
When all that I feel is guilt, fear, and blame
And I need forgiveness, relief from my shame,
He pours out his love, he runs to embrace,
My debts are forgiven, my sins are erased.

Verse 2:
When all that I give is anger and hate
And lonely affliction is lying in wait
He lavishes peace, he ministers grace,
And love and affection are fixed on his face.

Chorus:
I come, I come, come to my Lord
Who gives, who gives, always gives more, always gives more.
He gives and he gives, and he gave till it hurt
And here in his giving I find my true worth.

Verse 3:
When all that I have is hunger and thirst
And gone are my comforts, my health, and my worth,
I ask just for bread but he brings a feast
And weep as the greatest attends to the least

Verse 4:
When all that I know is bondage and chains
And sin, death, and darkness are all that remains,
I beg for a savior but he gives a friend
Who not only rescues but loves till the end.
